Marian devotional medals
Mary, as the Mother of God, occupies one of the most important places in Christianity, and is therefore the most represented figure on devotional medals. During the Baroque period, various typological representations of the Virgin Mary developed in art, which can be seen on the images depicted on devotional medals. She was pictured as the Queen of the Holy Rosary (or Our Lady of the Rosary), Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows (Mater Dolorosa), Our Lady of Mount Carmel (or Our Lady of the Scapular) and as the Immaculate Virgin Mary (Immaculata). In addition to the Virgin Mary herself, the medals also feature scenes from her life, such as the Pietà, the Annunciation or the Coronation of the Virgin, as well as Virgin Mary’s monograms. Most often, the image of Mary is combined with the image of Jesus or various saints. Marking Marian apparitions and visions, a large number of shrines were built around Europe, and therefore her image also appeared on pilgrimage devotional medals.
