Pilgrimage devotional medals
We can trace the development of pilgrimage starting as early as the 4th century, when people of faith began to visit the graves of martyrs and saints in the Holy Land. Pilgrimages always involve physical effort; believers make sacrifices and renunciations in order for their sins to be redeemed and their prayers to be answered at the end of the journey. In the Middle Ages, pilgrimages were made to distant shrines such as Rome, Santiago de Compostela, the Shrine of St Thomas of Canterbury, and the Shrine of the Three Kings in Cologne. At the beginning of the Early Modern Period, shorter pilgrimages were more popular and it was customary to go on pilgrimage several times during one’s lifetime. It was also common to visit several shrines on one pilgrimage. On the pilgrimage, people of faith did the same as we do today: they bought souvenirs, which would later remind them of the holy place they had visited; and during the 17th and 18th centuries, the most popular pilgrimage souvenir was a devotional medal. According to the medals that have been found, we can assume that the inhabitants of Rijeka and Mošćenice most often made pilgrimages to the Loreto shrine in Italy, which is associated with Trsat through the legend of the translation of the Holy House. The pilgrimage to this shrine took approximately fifteen days. Medals from various shrines in Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic have also been found, e.g. from Mariazell in Styria, Maria Taferl in Lower Austria or the farthest one, Cologne, to which pilgrimages took as long as twenty-seven days.
